Victor Petersen presenting recommendations
to the full TYTF - April 2007.

Our very own Victor Petersen, age 18, is a young adult member of the Mayor's Transitional Youth Task Force (TYTF). The Mayor has charged the Task Force with making policy recommendations to improve outcomes for Transitional Youth. CHALK's Project Director, Ruth Barajas, is also a member of the TYTF.

Please join in congratulating Shquane (Listener) for being our newest employee of the month.

She’s really stepped up her work these past few months and it’s about time she got noticed for it.  From being on time (mostly early!) to all of her shifts, to taking the initiative to take on side tasks at the office, to really just contributing to CHALK in many many areas, she’s been doin it big! Congratulations Shquane and keep up the good work!

Project HPV Colored Ink presents Karmalized Talent

This project is led by a group of young people from Mission High School, who hope to increase awareness of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), its symptoms, causes and a new prevention vaccine.  The youth will bring information of the possible complications caused by this virus, such as some cancer in women.  This project hopes to also begin a campaign extending outside of their high school, so that all of San Francisco’s youth are aware of this epidemic and why they are at risk.

Even though HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) infection is a very common STD, most at-risk females do not know about it.  Those who are infected often have no symptoms.  However HPV infection can lead to cervical cancer.  HPV Types 6 and 11 cause 90% of genital warts cases.  This is the first time in human history that the dream of preventing a cancer with a vaccine has been realized.  This project hopes to increase awareness of the vaccine.

DTS is a movement to give urban youth a voice through hip-hop and spoken word. A way to expose to  our communities to the trials and tribulations of San Francisco youth. Karmalized Talent was co-founded by Ashley Smiley and Cherrise Hughes. Karmalized Talent is a group of seven young women and two young men. Insistent on decrypting our current society and and encrypting knowledge, peace, and love. Thud the name Decrypting the System.
